The $176 million refurb and expansion of the Cairns Convention Centre will create hundreds of new jobs during the construction phase and drive long-term economic benefits to the Cairns region.
The contract was awarded to construction giant, Lend Lease, in December 2019 and planning for stage one is now underway.
The upgrade will involve significant refurbishment of the existing facilities as well as services upgrades.
Once complete, the Cairns Convention Centre will boast a new entry, new exhibition space, and a rooftop banqueting space.
Lend Lease’s General Manager, Brad Protheroe, has recently announced that Lend Lease will work to support the Cairns economy throughout the delivery of the project.
“Leveraging our local presence and our commitment to regional Queensland, we will continue to work with the industry to ensure that the engagement of local sub-contractors and suppliers on the Cairns Convention Centre project will be optimised to deliver long-term economic benefit to the region.”
The Cairns Convention Centre upgrade is anticipated to support –

- 570 jobs over the lifetime of the project;
- The awarding of 130 trade packages to sub-contractors and service providers;
- An anticipated 20,000 additional visitors to the region, and as a result, inject $50 million annually into the local economy.
The refurbishment is expected to commence in May of this year.
During this time, the Convention Centre will close its doors to allow minimal interruptions to centre operations.
It will reopen again in November 2020 and the expansion is expected to be complete by 2022.
